A Week-by-Week Moving House Checklist for West Lancashire

Moving house is easier when you break it into small jobs. Here is the checklist we give our own customers in Skelmersdale and across West Lancashire, starting a month before the big day.

Four weeks before

• Book your man and van. Good dates go quickly, especially Fridays and the end of the month. Call or text 07448 098144 for a fixed quote for your house removal.
• Start decluttering. Go room by room and sell, donate or recycle anything you do not want to take.
• Collect boxes. Supermarkets and online marketplaces are good sources, or ask us about boxes with our packing service.
• Tell your landlord or agent if you are renting, and check what notice and cleaning they need.

Two weeks before

• Redirect your post with Royal Mail.
• Update your address with your bank, employer, doctor, dentist, DVLA and West Lancashire Borough Council (or your new council if you are moving out of the area).
• Arrange utilities. Book final meter readings for gas, electricity and water, and set up broadband at the new place. Broadband installs can take a couple of weeks, so do this early.
• Start packing the rooms and items you use least, such as the loft, spare room and books.

One week before

• Confirm the details with us: times, both addresses, parking and anything awkward like stairs or a long path.
• Use up your freezer food and plan simple meals for the last few days.
• Pack most of the house, leaving out only what you need day to day.
• Label every box with the room it is going to. A simple label like “Kitchen” or “Bedroom 2” makes unloading much faster.

The day before

• Defrost the fridge freezer and leave the doors open so it is dry for the van.
• Disconnect the washing machine if you can, or ask us in advance.
• Pack an essentials box: kettle, mugs, tea, phone chargers, toilet roll, basic tools, medication, bedding and a change of clothes. Keep this with you, not in the van.
• Save parking spaces outside both properties if possible.

Moving day

• Take meter readings and photos at both properties.
• Walk round with the crew so they know what is going and what is staying.
• Do a final check of cupboards, the loft, the shed and the garden.
• Hand over keys and lock up.

At your new home

• Tell us which room is which and we will place furniture and boxes where you want them, and rebuild the beds.
• Make the beds first. You will be glad of it later.
• Unpack the kitchen next, then take the rest one room at a time.
